The right music helps pets relax when they’re home alone.
And as a research team in Finland recently discovered, music also plays an important role in sport. In the team’s study, 29 participants completed two high-intensity cycling workouts, one without music and one while listening to a playlist they’d selected themselves.
In the latter, they kept going at 80% of their peak power for 35.6 minutes as opposed to 29.8 minutes, a differential of 20%. Importantly, in both tests participants’ heart rates and lactic acid levels remained the same.
A sign that picking their own music improved both resilience and stamina, opening the door for serious fitness gains.
Useful knowledge, given that sport can help suppress cancerous tumours.
