The same cannot be said for supermarket-bought food, even organic produce. Which is why an Argentinian startup is developing solutions to verify the agricultural supply chain’s sustainability.
First, NASA images of the production area are analysed. This helps determine whether areas were created through deforestation, and if nearby wetlands or protected areas are endangered.
Also, the way in which cultivation practices have changed over time. Second, farmers can register their plant seeds. Then, all stages of plant production right up to delivery are recorded on a blockchain, revealing the goods’ carbon footprint.
Another platform is bringing African farmers in direct contact with agricultural firms.
