Compensatory catch

Sustainability

Rapidly spreading algae makes construction materials more sustainable.

High numbers of shore crabs likewise disrupt the maritime ecosystem. Which is why a Danish startup is collecting the invasive beach- and ocean-dwellers using crab baskets or passive fishing nets.

Once caught, crab flesh and shell are processed separately into flour and used as animal- or fish-feed supplements. Crab meal powder contains 43% protein, and 55% protein as concentrate.

Like vitamins, the naturally-occurring red pigment astaxanthin has anti-inflammatory properties, promoting growth and developing animal immune systems.

The shredded shells, meanwhile, are calcium-rich and make eggshells more robust when used as chicken feed.

Fly larvae provide an alternative to animal feed. Chitin from crab shells has also been used to make biodegradable film.
