Going with the flow is a good thing – unless we are talking waste in rivers. Because it flows into the sea.
A Dutch not-for-profit organization, known for ridding the ocean of plastic, has turned its attention to the source of the problem.
Working with a partner specializing in cranes, it launched its latest project in Rotterdam. Using a long lever a small solar-powered vessel collects river waste and transfers it to a dumpster internally via conveyor belt.
Sensors control the fill level of 50 cubic meters. Three boats currently roam a river each in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Dominican Republic, and more are announced for spring 2021.
The aim is to tackle the 1000 most polluted rivers in the world.
All aboard!
