Some wheelchairs can be steered by head movements or facilitate conversations at eye-level.
But recording cinema-quality moving images from different perspectives has – until now – proved challenging for wheelchair users. Enter the founder of an inclusive film production company in London and his ingenious wheelchair-based camera mounting system.
Like a steadicam, the system delivers 3-stage image stabilisation, while balancing the load of the 10-13 kg filmmaking device across the undercarriage.
It also serves as an alternative to dolly tracks. As with the specialised rail system, the electric wheelchair and mounting combo keeps recordings steady at speeds of up to 20km/h.
Others are going in front of the lens to foster inclusion, while 2024 saw the first ever prison-based film festival.
