Carbon copy

Sustainability

Rapidly-spreading algae can be repurposed as building material.

Now, an Austrian startup is using waste from construction to store CO2 safely and create new materials at the same time.

First the scrap material is analysed. Whether rubble or slag from iron or steel production, ash from incinerator plants or cement waste.

Based on a sample, a patented process determines the maximum amount of CO2 that can be stored. Per ton of waste, that figure can be up to 300kg.

Then carbon dioxide from industrial production, the air or potentially the sea is added. The system even analyses the best possible use for the new material, be it concrete mix, cement additive or road repairs.

Ships can also generate building materials.
