Operational ring

Diversity & Ethics

New wheelchairs can be controlled by head movements.

Now, a Californian startup has developed a wearable ring to operate light switches, fans and air-conditioning units more easily.

The ring uses infrared to communicate with an electric switch cover, placed over a rocker switch, at distances of up to 10m. Both ring and switch cover take an hour to charge.

Low energy consumption means they can be used for months at a time. Toggle switch covers will be available soon. The travel-friendly solution has been optimised for use by people with disabilities.

In contrast to smart home solutions that use WiFi, the technology protects users’ privacy – also a goal of this ring concept.

Room temperature could soon be regulated without electricity.
