Wheelchairs can be controlled by the tiniest head movements.
Of the 130 million wheelchair users worldwide, however, some 60% develop an ulcer at some point in their lives.
This is caused by the pressure resulting from their remaining in the same position for long periods of time. But a Portuguese startup has developed a digital solution for the problem.
Its sensor mat can be integrated into cushions, recording wheelchair users’ seating positions and their impact on body tissue. From these data, artificial intelligence calculates the likelihood of a pressure ulcer developing.
Wheelchair users or nursing staff are notified by app so that preventative measures can be taken.
Another startup, meanwhile, offers wheelchair users the chance to refresh – in the sea.
