Thanks to tequila, sustainable cutlery is a reality. Beer has already inspired researchers to develop alternatives to animal feed.
Lately, a London-based startup has been working with brewers to develop a leather alternative using the spent grain from the brewing process.
A combination of plant proteins and fibres and non-toxic chemicals creates a dark, biodegradable material with similar properties to leather.
While the startup is still in its infancy, its founders have pledged to use one hundred times less water than traditional leather production, likewise reducing CO2 emissions by a factor of one hundred.
Then there are all the cows, whose hides will be spared… Bacteria can also help produce leather-like material; in India flower waste is all the rage.
