Balancing cloud usage can keep emissions and energy costs at bay.
Meanwhile, an English startup is aiming to reduce both in public swimming pools by building data centres near the baths and using their thermal discharge to heat the water. All that’s required is a digital boiler.
The startup bears the costs for the electricity as well as the installation and maintenance of the boiler – since the heat transfer cools their computers.
The technology will be tested on twenty pools this year. In the future, entire apartment blocks could benefit from such heat grids.
And: surplus energy from renewable sources can be stored as heat while a new filtering membrane generates its own energy during the wastewater treatment process.
