Working together, ants can achieve great things and are actually stronger than many larger animals.
Following their lead, a Norwegian-based startup has developed a 300-meter-high lattice structure containing multiple miniature wind turbines.
Their rotor blades have an advantage over those of bigger turbines, lasting 20 years longer and being cheaper to manufacture.
The firm’s concept is based on mounting 117 mini turbines inside a square framework anchored on a platform in the sea. This saves space.
Each individual turbine creates a megawatt of electricity. Together the turbines generate electricity for 80,000 households – five times more than their conventional-sized counterparts.
The technology could make green electricity more cost-effective and more competitive. A prototype is scheduled for completion in 2022.
