Local potential

Sustainability

Farm shops are all the rage.

Using them helps support local producers, and we know where our food is coming from. Now a startup in south LA has decided to grow vegetables and herbs in front yards.

Currently, unused lawns are giving way to some 600 plants – hello, microfarms. People from the neighbourhood can pay $36 a month and receive 1.3 kg of organic produce per week.

Anyone offering up their front yard can not only enjoy the yield, but share in the profits. Plants are watered using a special water recycling system, saving 92% of water.

Currently the startup is providing food for 50 families who have limited access to other amenities.

Modern front yards.
