Yes, hemp is back. Only this time as an alternative to meat substitutes made from algae, pea or soy protein.

The newest brainchild of a Kiwi startup is designed to replace chicken on burgers or in salads. And it’s said to taste like it too.

Hemp seeds are not only low in saturated fat, but a good source of fibre and protein. They can even have a positive impact on the cardiovascular system, and act as anti-inflammatory agents.

An alternative to red meat is already available in supermarkets in New Zealand – and perhaps it will soon be hip here.
