With climate change impacting consistent plant properties, a female-founded startup in Spain is mitigating the risk by growing hops vertically in 10m high greenhouses. These are erected next to breweries to use their wastewater for the plants.
An automated system controls factors such as air humidity and the composition of the fertiliser. These parameters are determined in the lab for each type of hop. A pilot project spanning 1,200㎡ is underway.
Abandoned barns are also enjoying a second life as greenhouses.
