Cheers to significance

Art & Leisure

Spirit production provides furniture in Scotland.

And as another Scottish startup discovered, whisky by-products can also help reduce overfishing. The team uses distillery waste water to manufacture Omega-3s.

Wild fish are known to be a rich source of the fatty acids, but they actually acquire them by eating algae.

The team used the waste from whisky distillation (including barley) to breed the algae themselves in large tanks. Once dried, the new Omega-3 rich algae is used to feed farmed fish or in the production of pet food.

Thereby significantly reducing our dependence on wildfish. The water in the tanks is recycled by the algae and can be reused.

Waste water from aquacultures or soybean production is pretty useful too.
