Bottoms up

Mobility

Slowing down container ships saves on CO2.

And now a US-based startup is making the switch from road to rail in the logistics sector more efficient by developing a purely electric, driverless transport system.

The system uses gripping arms to load containers onto the loading surface and operates autonomously on roads. The switch to rail networks is made possible by a chassis with rail wheels which emerges from the underbody.

It lifts the road wheels off the track. Thereafter, the system will be remotely controlled. The shuttle’s hardware is patented, and a pilot project is planned for later this year on a 40 mile stretch of track.

Competition is hotting up; perhaps generating electricity between the tracks will be key…
