Mushrooms can play a vital role in computer technology. And are equally good at dealing with noise pollution.
They also form part of an underground network which supplies trees with nutrients, helping them to grow. If trees are felled and uprooted, however, these networks also disappear.
Now, an Edinburgh-based startup is restoring this ecosystem by preparing individually-tailored pellets containing locally sourced fungi.
Planted 10cm or more beneath the soil near new trees as part of reforestation projects, the pellets allow new networks to flourish.
This helps trees to grow more healthily and establish deeper roots. Leading, in turn, to improved resistance against disease and extreme weather.
Sustainable packaging, meanwhile, is not barking up the wrong tree.
