The insects can bend their piercing and sucking proboscises at 90 degree angles, penetrating even the thickest compression stockings.

The new elastic material is densely knitted on a micro-level to both block bites and let air in.

Once wearer comfort is assured, a brand to market the material will be founded. The team might find an artificial skin useful for additional tests.

According to Finnish research, natural fibres can be used to make UV-resistant yarn.
