Growing your own food sustainably so that you are not reliant on foreign supply has its advantages. As we have seen in Los Angeles, for example.
Now a research team based at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has developed a pacemaker that can be powered by the heart itself.
Estimates place the output power of the heart at 192 microwatts. A pacemaker can run on 10 microwatts. Energy is generated through a special shell which encloses the heart.
When the heart beats, piezoelectric capsules within the shell are bent, creating enough kinetic energy to power the pacemaker.
The team is currently optimizing the technology, with an emphasis on stability and composition.
A sustainable friend for the self-dissolving pacemaker.
