But the Paris Opera is committing itself to a new era of diversity. Up until recently roles of color were played by white dancers wearing masks.
Five Black dancers in the entire Opera tells its own story.
The artistic director is promoting a new strategy which will see people from diverse backgrounds actively recruited for ballet, orchestral and choral parts, as well as for behind-the-scenes roles in the organization.
Equally important is that dancers’ costumes be coordinated with their skin color.
