Interviews, appearing on stage, the menopause… all can bring us out in a sweat. And sport. Now researchers in Singapore have developed a novel film to keep us cool when we exert ourselves.
Two highly hygroscopic chemicals make sure that sweat evaporates from our skin swiftly: fifteen times more moisture can be absorbed at six times the rate compared to traditional materials.
In sunlight the film releases water and can be reused up to 100 times. It get’s even better. If the film, functioning as an electrolyte, is combined with electrochemical cells, electricity can be generated.
Sandwiched between breathable membranes, future underarm pads or shoe insoles could not only guarantee increased personal comfort but even charge a wearable.
Cool runnings!
