Meanwhile, a new startup in Germany is aiming to provide warm meals to those in financial need, while simultaneously reducing food waste in canteens. Students or those on a tight budget register on the app.
After vetting, they can request food each day from a nearby canteen for a limited time period. A pre-defined low-price flat rate applies.
When notified that a cafeteria has surplus food, users pick up the meal at an agreed time, verifying themselves through the app. The platform plans to provide analysis and monthly reports for participating canteens.
Others help companies compost employees’ food waste on site; while domestic leftovers can be shared with neighbours.
