Sustainability

The search for new ways to recycle plastic is gathering pace.

An English startup is taking the reverse approach and using multilayered neural networks to create new proteins for sustainable textiles. Focusing only on biodegradable fibres free of fossil fuels.

The team, formed during a university research project, has developed a deep-learning AI which bases its search on criteria such as appearance, composition and tensile strength.

Corresponding microorganisms adapted in the lab create the fibres with the help of renewable raw materials. These samples are tested for stability and functionality, data which is then fed back into the AI tool.

Cow dung can likewise supply fibre, while chemical dyes could soon be consigned to the past.
