Now, a Portuguese startup is hoping to prevent some 2 million animals each year from ending up as watch straps, shoes or bags.

Animal cells are taken once from a 1 cm2 sized area, multiplied in the lab and manufactured into leather.

The patent-pending process could save on some 25 billion litres of water each year and produce materials that are more resistant than plant-based leather alternatives.

Market reports suggest that 65% of luxury goods buyers pay attention to manufacturers’ sustainability efforts.

Some gourmets can already eat with a clear conscience.
