Prison libraries help residents gain new perspectives.
Now, a non-profit organisation in the US is supporting communities with libraries of a different kind.
Founded by a 17-year-old female high school student, the organisation uses public libraries and food banks to address the impact of ‘food deserts’, providing residents with seed packs free of charge.
Locals thus have the opportunity to grow tomatoes, beans or salad themselves and eat more healthily as a result.
The team of high school students is funded through donations, and has already distributed over 8,600 seed packs across 60 different locations in the US and Canada.
A robot could help plants grow in the actual desert, while gorse’s nutritional value is not to be underestimated.
