A digital pen can detect and translate Braille in real time.

Now, a Swiss startup has developed smart glasses to help blind people or those with limited vision detect obstacles and move around safely.

Two radar sensors in the frames, which run for six hours on a single charge, scan the area above chest-level.

An algorithm then analyses the signals, activating small motors which cause an element at the temple stem to vibrate behind the wearer’s ear.

The haptic feedback lets users avoid obstacles that a white cane typically wouldn’t detect, thus evading potential injury. An optional smartphone app is planned.

A vibrating headset is aiming to achieve completely hands-free support. Other glasses, meanwhile, can turn sound into text.
