Laughter is good for us. In person, it’s clear enough when someone’s joking.
But on social media – with no facial expressions, gestures or intonation to guide us – black humor and sarcasm can all too frequently be lost.
Now, an informatics research team from the University of Florida has developed an artificial intelligence for sentiment analysis. It can spot sarcasm in customers’ online feedback.
Using multiple iterations, the team taught the AI to recognize patterns and key words, developing an awareness of particular lexical combinations.
In future the technology could help companies analyze emotions and the virtual mood of their clients with greater accuracy.
