Recycling is important for any sustainable society. Something the fashion industry is beginning to recognize.
The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles has developed a machine that cleans old fabric without the use of chemicals, shreds it, and spins it back into yarn before knitting it into a new product.
The concept is being road-tested at a popular Swedish high street chain. Customers drop off their old pairs of jeans or T-shirts, and choose through an app what kind of new – same size – clothing they want.
After 5-8 hours, and for around 10 euro, it’s ready for pick-up. The machine won the ‘World Changing Ideas’ award in 2021.
An opportunity to change the amount of future textile waste.
