But what of the people who scale dizzying heights in order to pick the tropical fruit, risking their lives in the process?

Now an Indian research unit has developed a sophisticated ring-shaped robot that gives this small force of skilled workers a hand.

Slower perhaps but possessing greater stamina, the robot is controlled by joystick and safely operated from the ground, meaning more coconuts are harvested and fewer lives lost.

Now, that’s what we call bearing the palm…
