
An app encourages school pupils to read. Authors benefit there too, as it drives sales and loans of books, and ultimately leads to royalty payments.
But not if companies train their AI systems using pirate digital copies. Cue an American startup and its new licensing platform for AI firms, which aims at a fairer system for authors.
Once authors have confirmed their identity, they register their books through the app and decide how AI firms can use their work. For training purposes, say, or to allow extracts to be shown to users of the AI. Either way, the authors control the terms of their remuneration.
A similar platform is focusing on larger publishing houses; AI firms can also be certified.
