For efficiency, the human brain often takes snapshots.

But with age, inflamed brain cells can lead to memory loss or dementia. Enter a US-based research team and its nasal spray which can stop or even reverse the process.

Made using bio-molecules (microRNAs) developed from neural stem cells, it is delivered via the nose into the wall of the hippocampus.

Initial and ethically approved tests with mice showed that the molecules suppressed the proteins responsible for causing inflammation.

Additionally, proteins involved in combating oxidative stress multiplied. Reinvigorating brain cells. The animals were able to recognise more objects than before and even detect new ones.

A nasal swab can provide an early indication of Alzheimer’s. Other nasal sprays help those with Parkinson’s.
