Fungi for healthy feet? No longer a paradox thanks to DIY insoles.
Now a research team in Atlanta has invented a smart inner sole to support people with walking problems. Pressure data from each foot is collected thanks to 170 thin, flexible sensors spread across the soles underneath users’ feet.
Meaning each step can be analysed to determine whether someone is off-balance. Data from the sensors is transferred to external devices via Bluetooth. Enabling the development of smartphone apps or automated steering for motorised aids.
Using the data to train AI systems could help predict and even prevent falls. The sensors are screen printed, laying a platform for low-cost, large-scale manufacture.
For outsoles, meanwhile, wine corks are stepping in.
