Infectious diseases could be contained with locally printed vaccine patches.
In Florida, a research team has spent years searching for a universal vaccine against cancer building on a recent successful study involving selected cancer patients.
Their new genetic vaccine sample activates the body’s immune system against cancer generally. It stimulates the growth of new T-cells, while at the same time encouraging cancer cells to produce a protein called PD-L1.
This protein is a malicious signal which attracts T-cells. But it also allows cancer cells to be destroyed by them. In tests with mouse models, some tumours were eliminated entirely in this way. Next step: a clinical study.
Sea cucumbers can also be deployed in the fight against cancer.
