The spicy compound in chillies can do wonders for our health.
Now, a US research team is looking for a silver bullet when it comes to the Big C. They’re nearly there, with a new study taking in more than 70 cancer types.
Key here is a specially developed molecule that targets a cancerous variant of PCNA, a protein which helps cancer cells replicate.
If this variant is not present, the tumour is prevented from growing and its cells die off.
Thus far, studies with breast, prostate, brain, ovarian, uterine, skin and lung cancer cells have thrown up no negative side effects. A clinical trial involving humans is currently underway.
Research into adverse effects or bowel cancer offers hope, too.
