Soluble transport

Life Science

New glasses make blind spots visible again.

In Australia, however, a research team is focusing on how to treat retinal diseases such as macular degeneration in the early stages of the condition.

Preferably without the need for the injections. Lipo-soluble pigments from Gac fruit were integrated into a solution similar to eye drops.

Using nanotechnology allowed the pigments – called luteins – to be delivered via the solution to the retina. Until now the area was only accessible by injection.

Following a pre-clinical study, future research will focus on how lutein administered this way could be used as a preventative measure against retinal diseases.

In London work is underway to replace dead photoreceptor cells. Nanotechnology could also be instrumental in transporting vaccines.
