Wastewater from soybean production can provide fodder for fish.
Meantime, a university research team from the US has been experimenting with wastewater from beer and potato production, as the sodium acetate it contains is a carbon compound offering a low-cost alternative to glucose.
Like glucose, it can be a carbon source for the protein-rich microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana.
The team was able to double the marine plant’s protein biomass by additionally varying the amount of nitrogen and sunlight it was exposed to for four days. Making the microalgae a possible protein source for humans or poultry feed.
Waste from beer is already helping to create an alternative to the latter. Other types of algae are reducing methane production among livestock.
