Meanwhile an American gynaecologist is helping women of various ages get to grips with another gender-specific health scourge. Her startup is treating vaginal infections, caused by fungus or bacteria.

Not only are such infections incredibly unpleasant, in pregnant women they also come with an increased risk of premature birth.

Patented tampon-like objects, which have been pre-cooled for 30 minutes in the freezer, are inserted into the vagina for around half an hour.

Lowering the temperature kills off the pathogens without damaging the surrounding tissue. As well as promoting the growth of pH-value regulating lactic bacteria and reducing itchiness. All without antibiotics.

Elsewhere, work is underway on comfortable contraceptives and customisable pessaries.
