Cataloguing insects makes sense, as they can be important for the surrounding environment.
Not always, however. Which is why a startup from Glasgow is looking to target harmful parasites using biotechnology rather than chemicals.
The project, which began life at Glasgow University, relies on lab recreations of natural proteins found within unwanted insects in order to use them as individual plant protection agents.
Since some of these proteins occur in the blood, they influence the behaviour of the respective insect species. The lab-created peptides, therefore, can stop each unwanted species from eating plants, say, or laying eggs.
Providing protection for other insects such as bees and pollinators.
Likewise, ladybird scents, maze-like fabrics and aloe vera waste are environmentally-friendly alternatives.Â
